July 31, 2025 What to know about the brain disease CTE By Alice Park Senior Correspondent This week's horrific shooting in New York City shone an unwelcome spotlight on chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a neurological condition caused by repetitive brain injury. The shooter, who took his own life, allegedly referenced the condition in a note found in his pocket. I spoke to scientists about the disease who said that while there aren't yet treatments or even ways to diagnose it in living patients, CTE is a growing concern.
